L’occhio dell’artista è in grado di raccontare la realtà nella sua essenza, di cogliere ciò che non è immediatamente evidente, di percepire e rivelare, con la sua sensibilità, meccanismi, processi e trasformazioni in atto.
In questo dipinto un’iconografia tradizionale si presta in modo singolare e persuasivo alla riflessione sui nuovi modelli di identificazione e relativi stili di vita.
Dal punto di vista formale è un ritratto maschile in abiti borghesi, un uomo d’affari o un politico, emblema di prestigio e potere economico, il volto però è quello del mondo che tra le sfumature dell’incarnato si presenta con le sue catene montuose, le sue depressioni desertiche e le sue doline.
Intorno al volto, inflitti, come chiodi di un martirio, i grattacieli del potere. La disposizione a raggiera richiama un’aureola che, come per il volto di un santo, rende visibile e consegna alla devozione e al culto dei fedeli la testimonianza di un exemplum da imitare.
Il dipinto evoca la “santificazione” della modernità e nel contempo ne lascia intuire i rischi.
La tavolozza pittorica ci sorregge nella lettura. Nel fondo la scelta dei toni suggerisce una situazione in divenire. La linea dell’orizzonte divide il dipinto in diagonale, si scorge così alle spalle del nostro uomo una distesa d’acqua che si confonde con il cielo, grave ed incombente nella sua uniformità, solo i ghiacciai e le nuvole sulla diagonale ne demarcano i rispettivi limiti.
Ma l’aere, apparentemente stabile e immobile, è improvvisamente lacerata da uno squarcio rosso, come una ferita che si dilata, e allora l’osservatore si accorge che i paesaggi sono due. Ai lati dell’uomo, infatti, altre montagne emergono con le loro cime taglienti e quella lacerazione acquista le fattezze di un’atmosfera improvvisamente tesa, rovente che, con la sua penetrante intensità, scompagina la situazione ex ante.
Come non pensare agli effetti del surriscaldamento terrestre, alle conseguenze sull’ambiente della frenetica attività umana così ben sintetizzata nel tratto “a picco” graffito sulla superficie dei grattacieli? Un elettrocardiogramma del mondo?
L’istante e il divenire si incontrano e si offrono all’osservatore che resta in vibrante attesa di un equilibrio che sta per infrangersi.

The painting evokes the “sanctification” of modernity and at the same time it suggests the risk.
The palette painting sustains us in reading. In the end the choice of colors suggests a situation in flux. The horizon line divides the picture diagonally, so you can see our man behind an expanse of water that merges with the sky, serious and imminent in its uniformity, only the glaciers and clouds on the diagonal will demarcate their limits.
But the air, seemingly motionless and stable, is suddenly torn apart by a red gash, like a wound that extends and then the viewer realizes that the two landscapes. On either side of man, other mountain peaks emerge with their sharp and tear that takes the features of the atmosphere suddenly tense, fiery, with its penetrating intensity, disrupts the situation ex ante.
How can we forget the impact of global warming, the environmental consequences of frantic human activity so well summarized in the tract “sheer” engraved on the surface of skyscrapers? An electrocardiogram of the world?
